California was declared a Republic,
independent of Mexico on 14 June 1846 by a group of settlers who marched on
the Mexican garrison at Sonoma. This was known as the Bear Flag Revolt for the
flag showing a grizzly bear and a star over a red bar with the words, "California
Republic." The flag only flew for less than a month, until 9 July 1846,
after Mexico and the US were at war. It was adopted as the state flag by the
state legislature in 1911
