George M. Cohan immortalized New Rochelle as being "forty-five minutes from Broadway" in his musical of the same name. It is actually about 16 miles from New York. It is among the top ten in size among New York State's cities. New Rochelle was founded in 1688 by the French Huguenots who named the town after their last stronghold in France, La Rochelle.

Founded in 1904 as a liberal arts college for women, the College added the Graduate School in 1969, the School of New Resources (for adult learners) in 1972, and the School of Nursing in 1976. Today, the School of Arts and Sciences continues the tradition of enrolling only women, while the other three schools admit both women and men.
