"Deer Lodge earned its name from a thermal spring that gave off largeamounts of vapor and built up a cone almost 40 feet high. From a distancethe cone and vapor resembled an Indian lodge with smoke rising from it.Many Deer often frequented the area to feed; thus, the name Deer Lodge."

The ranch is maintained today as a working ranch and includes 1,500 acres and 90 structures.
This is the only National historic Site dedicated to the cowboy and cattlemen. It displays exhibits and memorabilia, along with equipment used in the Western cattle industry from the 1850s through modern times.

The old Territorial Prison

The new Frontier Montana Museum in Deer Lodge
Opened in 1994, this museum houses two of the finest collections of western memorabilia in the entire country.
