Chamber of Commerce.
New Market was an important part of the Old National Road and was a trade route during the late 1700's.
Nicholas Hall tried to start up the Town of New Market in 1788, but was not successful. It seems there was difficulty betwee William Plummer, an adjoining landowner, and himself. Later on 1 August 1792, Plummer laid out the Town with 36 lots. Then on 29 January 1793, Hall laid out 134 lots. The first lots sold were by Hall and this is when the town officially began. They designated the new main street of the town on both sides of the Frederick and Baltimore Turnpike. The new town attracted many travellers and new businesses as well. The town was incorporated in 1878.
