The music connection with Catonsville was recently recognized by the Washington Post in an article dated October 6, 2001: "But what gives Catonsville national appeal and has helped earn the town a reputation as 'Music Row' are the numerous music stores scattered along Frederick Road, the main street of the older central area that locals call 'the village.' The shops are like museums that detail pop music's explosion over the past 40 years, particularly the guitar's rise to dominance. When you walk down Frederick road you can often hear the sounds of swing, the wail of jazz, and the thump of rock-and-roll bursting out of the shop windows."
Catonsville is the home of the very popular outdoor concert series at the Lurman Woodland Theatre. Every weekend during the summer there are live music acts from a variety of styles including bluegrass, rock & roll, barbershop, Caribbean, Irish, big band, and more. The concerts are free to the public.
On May 21, 2002, the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce received the proclamation from the Maryland General Assembly declaring Catonsville "Music City Maryland."
