Yucaipa Adobe
State Historical Landmark #528
A land grant was issued to Antonio Maria Lugo in 1842 which included this site and established the San Bernardino Rancho. A cousin by marriage to the Lugo family, Diego Sepulveda, settled here in Yucaipa. Tradition says that this adobe was built by Sepulveda, but now it is believed his adobe was several hundred yards away and the Yucaipa Adobe was built by James Water, a local trapper, around 1858. Later, in 1869, John Dunlap, a Texas cattleman, purchased the ranch. The family moved into the adobe and members of the family lived here until the 1950s. Most of the surrounding property had been sold over time leaving just the adobe site. In 1954, the Yucaipa Woman's Club began to raise funds to save the adobe which had become quite delapidated. Later they gave the adobe to the county. The restored adobe had period furniture as well as farm implements from that era.
