Downey was named for John G. Downey (1826-94), who was the governor of California from 1860 to 1862. Downey was planned when the railroad arrived in the area. It remained largely an agricultural area until the late 1940's.
The Apollo spacecrafts were largely built here thus a nickname for the city became Home of Apollo.
