1970, November 19
Rick Tolley
A monument at the Mullens Athletic Field is in memory of Rick Tolley, graduate of V.P.I. and head coach of the Marshall University football team is located here in Mullens. He was killed with 74 team members on 19 November 1970. Mullens Athletic Field has facilities for baseball, football, tennis and has a swimming pool.

1937 - 1941
Mullens prospers because of the large demand for coal in Europe.
Mullens High School has its first state championship football team.

1932 - 1936
Mullens sees a recovery from the Depression through welfare programs, a rebirth of coal mining, union organizations and achievements in the school academics and athletics.

1926 - 1931
Mullens becomes a city with business booming when the Great Depression slows progress with economic and personal suffering. A new high school building and the Virginian Railway expansion is seen.

1894 - 1925
A mountain farm in a narrow valley becomes a town and railroad center for expanding coal camps.
