Alderson Missionary Baptist Church
P.O. Box 280
Craigsville, WV 26205
The first church organized in the Craigsville area was Alderson Missionary Baptist Church, which had its beginnings in a little log schoolhouse about one quarter mile south of the present church. The church had thirteen members, with Rev. Alfred McClean as pastor. Rev. McClean served for two years, when Rev. James F. Brown became pastor. He served for thirty-five years, until his death in 1920.
In 1889, the members built a frame building on the site of the present church at a total cost of two hundred seventy-five dollars. The lot was donated by Joe Brown, and the church was named for George Henry Alderson, who had business interest in the community. The building was constructed by Alfred Huff. It had two doors, as did many churches at this time, one for the ladies and one for the gentlemen.
The present building was dedicated in 1954, while Rev. Clyde L. West was pastor. Its other past pastors have been: Sylvanus Walker, Joe Brown, Bruce M. Lambert, Henry Loving, Glover P. Robinson, Clyde Sovine, Paul Skaggs, Dwight Lowther, Gary Eisenman, and Jack Eades. The present pastor is Ralph E. Groves.
At the present time God is doing a great work in The Alderson Missionary Baptist Church, supporting over 25 missionaries, and has a newly-built Fellowship Hall with all the accessories needed. If you don't have a home church, we'd love to have you visit us.
