Geography


in a valley about ten miles long and up to 1.5 miles wide. It was formed from the melting glaciers of thousands of years ago.

History & History Related Items

The first Europeans to the area were Marquette and Jolliet who came through on 17 June 1673. the name of Prairie du Chien came from the French for Prairie of the Dog, an early Fox chief who lived on the prairie. Early on, the area was kept as a rendezvous between the local Native Americans, the fur traders and okthers who would meet to exchange furs for other goods. Fort Shelby was built here in the early 1800's. It was burned in 1814 during the War of 1812. Prairie de Chien was incorporated in 1872.
