John Bruce, Jr. settled here in the spring of 1837 and built a home and hotel. The little settlement grew and became known as Bruceville after the first resident. Later, in 1840, it was renamed after Darien, New York where Bruce and other resident had previously lived. Darien was incorporated as a village in June 1951.
