The Birthplace of the Gideon Bible
Central House, Boscobel Hotel
1005 Wisconsin Ave.
Boscobel, WI
This is listed on both the state and national Registers of Historic Places. It was built in 1863. It was on 14 September 1898 that two men met at the hotel, John H. Nicholson and Samuel E. Hill. Both were traveling salesmen and as they shared a room at the hotel, they talked about starting some type of Christian association for traveling men. Later, in May 1899, a third man, William J. Knights, joined them. By 1 July 1899, they had founded the Gideons. The name came from Judges in the Old Testament. Room 19 of the Boscobel Hotel is marked with a plaque telling where the two men began the organization plans.
