The name Cosmopolis means "city of the world." It is next to the city of Aberdeen.

The founding fathers of Cosmopolis are David Byles, Austin Young, James and Henry Karr and Ed campbell. They began the area's first industry, a brickyard, in Cosmopolis. The site was platted in the early 1860s. It was later incorporated in 1891. The first mayor was George Stetson, who was also the general manager of the Grays Harbor mill.

Grays Harbor Historical Seaport - See the historic shipyard which is home to the Lady Washington, flagship of Washington State. It was built right here in Aberdeen and is a reproduction of the ship sailed by Captain Robert Gray on his first voyage. He is the first American to "discover" Grays Harbor.
