The Battle of the Crater took place here when Union soldiers tried to tunnel under the Confederate lines, creating great disaster. The seige of Petersburg helped bring about the surrender of Lee and the end of the Civil War.

Petersburg is part of the Richmond-Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area and also part of the Appomattox Basin regional economy which also includes Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County and Prince George County as well as the cities of Hopewell and Colonial Heights.
