Nederland was officially placed on the map on December 24, 1897

Immigrants from Holland came to the area in the late 1800's. In Dutch, the name, Nederland, means "lowland". The early settlers tried their hands at farming and dairying, but no great successes happened until the discovery of oil in the Spindletop oil field.

The Windmill Museum has 25 foot blades that really revolve. It was built to preserve the strong Dutch heritage in the area.
