Hempstead Historical Events 1860'sThe Last Prison: The Untold Story of Camp Groce CSA
During the Civil War, a prisoner of war camp was operated near the town of Hempstead, Texas. Called Camp Groce, over 1,100 Union prisoners of war were held there and over 200 died. Camp Groce wasalso used as a camp of instruction for Confederate recruits and was also where the last stand of the Confederacy was to have been held by order of Jefferson Davis.
Immediately after the surrender of the Trans-mississippi, the state was occupied by federal troops. Two divisions of Union cavalry entered the state. One division was commanded by Major General George Armstrong Custer. Custer's division was stationed at Liendo Plantation near Camp Groce.
