In its early days, El Lago was the home of Pirate Jean LaFitte and his cohorts. El Lago, itself, began in the 1950s and was incorporated in 1961. The area grew greatly between 1967 and 1975 as workers came to the nearby Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center
