A big spring in Sulphur Draw was a watering place for the wildlife of the area and for the local Comanche and Shawnee Indians. It is said the city's name is taken from this spring. This Handbook of Texas website has good historical information.

It is diverse encompassing many different sectors. Among these are agriculture and related industries with cotton as the major crop. Oil production and refining is also seen in the area.
