The City of Austwell was founded by Preston Rose Austin in 1912. Preston Rose Austin was very influential in the development of Austwell, Tivoli, and the surrounding area. The name of Austwell is coined from the first syllable of Austin and last syllabe of McDowell. Jesse C. McDowell was Austin's partner. Both men were prominent in the founding and settlement of the area.

Austwell was incorporated by an election held on September 10, 1914

The town was badly damaged by a storm in 1919 and almost destroyed by another on August 31, 1942.

Austwell is near the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge provides the closest view of the endangered Whooping Crane (Grus americana), tallest bird in North America. The refuge offers an Observation Tower (40 feet high), 16 mile Loop Tour Drive, hiking trails, picnic areas, and a Wildlife Interpretive Center with over 100,000 visitors each year.
