James' father, Samuel Polk, was a farmer and surveyor who built this home in 1816 while James attended the University of North Carolina. After his graduation in 1818, he returned home until he married Sarah Childress in 1824. He began his political career here by running and winning the election for the State Legislature. Many original artifacts and furnishings are in the home, including memorabilia from his White House years.
