Sioux Falls was named for the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River. It was first settled in 1857, but, due to Indian attacks, the first settlement was abandoned in just five years. A number of years went by before settlers returned. Though it is located in two counties, it is mainly situated in Minnehaha County.
