Chamber of Commerce.
Early explorers of the 18th century named two rivers just north of the mountains here the Belle Fourche River and the other, Redwater, because of the red silt it carried from the soil of the Redwater Valley. A third water source, Hay Creek, also merged with the two rivers here. The Belle Fourche River was the larger of the two. The Fork where they came together was referred to as "beautiful Fork" or Belle Fourche. The town was platted in 1891 and incorporated in 1903.
