St. Marys is the newest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as a result of consolidation of the Borough of St. Marys with the surrounding Township of Benzinger by voter referendum in 1991. Covering nearly 95 square miles, with a population of 14,020, St. Marys is the largest third-class city in Pennsylvania by land mass. The City operates under a Council-Manager form of government established by popular vote in 1992. It operates a full-time police force and a modern, volunteer fire department. The city also provides recreational facilities, zoning, planning, and airport services.
