A Swiss-German man, Joseph Johns (German surname was Tschantz) bought property at StonyCreek and the Little Conemaugh Rivers in 180 and began to lay out a town. The town grew and prospered. The great flood of 1889 helped to bring the community much closer together and several boroughs joined together to form the City of Johnstown which was incorporated later that year. A statue of the founder was commissioned by a German heritage society, and was dedicated on the 100-year anniversary of his death in 1913. Extensive information about this statue may be found in the book, Schantz and Johnstown available in local libraries.
The Iron and Steel industry in the area helped it to grow, but as the industry declined, it also helped the area population to drop.
