The Battle of Bushy Run, Pontiac's War
The Battle of Bushy Run occurred near here on August 5th and 6th, 1763. Colonel Henry Bouquet and his troops, which consisted of: The 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of Foot, "The Black Watch," The 77th Highland Regiment of Foot, The 60th Royal American Regiment of Foot and Lemeul Barrett's Rangers. These men were ambushed here by Native Americans, one mile from Bushy Run Station, while on their way to Fort Pitt which had been under siege from these same attackers. Bouquet had instructed his men to set up a "fort" for protection of the wounded. He used the flour bags they had brought along with them for food supply. The next day when the Natives attacked, Col. Bouquet had devised a plan to feign a retreat and make the attackers believe they had the opportunity for a easy victory. Meanwhile, the units that had retreated had really flanked the attackers and essentially forced the Natives into retreat, resulting in Victory for Bouquet. He then moved on to Fort Pitt. This Battle was the most decisive victory in, and the beginning of the end of, what we know as Pontiac's War.
