East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania Historical Events

1840
Beakleyville Baptist Church
Beakleyville Baptist Church in East Stroudsburg was the first Baptist church in Monroe County, and one of the first Baptist Churches north of Philadelphia. The church was founded in 1840 by the Rev. Beakley. Rev. Beakley held evangelistic meetings in the Angle Barn, originally located across from the old church building and cemetery. In 1843, Charrick VanVliet, a local farmer, gave 40 acres of ground for the construction of a meeting house and cemetery. After hauling 60 wagon loads of stone from the mountains for the meeting house, Mr. VanVliet was the first person to be buried in the cemetery. The building was completed in 1844, and worship services were held there continually until 1996, when the church moved to its current location on Fawn Road, about 300 yards from the original building, which still stands.
