Chambersburg Historical Events

1864, July 30
"The Burning of Chambersburg"
Chambersburg was the only northern town torched by the Confederate Army.
In retaliation for Major General David Hunter's burning of Virginia Military Institute, and for failure of the residents of the town to pay a ransom, Confederate General John McCausland ordered his men to burn the town of Chambersburg, PA on July 30, 1864.
