History & History Related Items

The original City Hall building has been restored by the Weleetka Historical Society and contains a walk through museum with excerpts from local newspapers. Great for history buffs. Many of the documents on display pre date Oklahoma statehood.
Weleetka is the Muscokee-Creek Indian word which translates "running water".
Native American Folklore legends say that Weleetka would never be hit by a tornado. The fact is that Weleetka has never been hit by a tornado although some have passed nearby.

There are two grocery stores (one with gas/diesel pumps), one full service gas station (tire & minor repairs), a Texaco gas/mart store, one country store, one drug & gift store [2 RPhs] (with souvenir items, greeting cards, books, gospel CD's and tapes and household supplies), one full service family restaurant with banquet room, one hardware store, one automotive parts store, three hair stylists (men and women), a fitness center, two tanning centers, one photographic/portrait studio, one antique store, one video store with game room, several plumbers and two construction companies, one carpet and floor covering store, one musical instrument and sundries store, one florist, one full service auto garage (major repairs) and a feed store.
Community services include a Senior Citizens Center with meals delivered to shut-ins, one geriatric nursing home, one residential care facility for mentally challenged, home health care (visiting nurses), one family clinic staffed by a P.A. and two doctors on call), one licensed daycare/preschool, Federal "HEADSTART" program, one preschool program as part of the public school. Volunteer fire department, trained paramedics and ambulance, local police department and jail. Weleetka has it's own weekly newspaper, housing authority, state bank, funeral home, water and sewage treatment plant, and city hall offices.
This is a small quiet town. Virtually no crime rate other than public drunk and the strict enforcement of speed limits.
GENERAL VIEW OF TOWN: Quiet, main street business section (US Hwy. 75) surrounded by neatly kept neighborhoods. Residents take pride in the appearance of their lawns. Some people keep horses and chickens within the town limits. Fishing is a popular pass time at the city lake and North Canadian River.
Weleetka has a two hole practice golf course located near the walking paths on the east side of town.
The nearest airport is in Henryetta, 13 miles from Weleetka. The runway length is 3,500 feet, the surface is asphalt. There is a fixed base operator and there are lights.

Place: Main Street of Weleetka

Sponsored by: Area merchants and the Chamber of Commerce
PRIDE DAY - this annual celebration features a "Kiddie Parade", motorized decorated parade and the main parade with marching bands from area schools, floats, Miss Pride Day and her court, area officials and politicians, horse riding clubs and church floats. Games for the whole family such as the egg toss, greased water balloon toss, watermelon seed spit'n contest, horseshoes, archery, many arts and crafts booths line Main Street, mid-way kiddie rides, helicopter rides, gospel singing stages and the evening street dance from 9 'til midnight. Weleetka does not sell alcoholic beverages on the street and strictly enforces the open container laws. Security for this family event is provided by the Weleetka Police Department, Okfuskee County Sheriff's Department, Creek Nation Light Horsemen, Department of Corrections and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The "Miss Pride Day Pageant" will be opened to all contestants (within a 30 mile radius of Weleetka) between the first grade and 12th grade. The pageant will be held in the high school auditorium. For more information, call Mrs. Dana Rae Goodnight, director, at (405) 786-2044. A separate "Baby Pageant" will be held for contestants up to five years of age. The Baby Contest director is Mrs. Cindy Majors and she may be reached by calling (405) 786-2411.

The Primary (grades K-6) School is located in underground buildings providing safety for children (and the community) in the event of a tornado. The K-3 is in the South buildings and 4-6 is in the north building. The Middle School and High School (Jr. High with grades 7-9 and HIgh School with grades 10-12) buildings remain above ground.
