Here is a history page for Shelby.

The area was first known as Gamble's Mill after James Gamble who built a gristmill here in 1823. In 1824, a sawmill was built by Eli Wilson. In 1836, the name of the community was officially changed to Shelby to honor General Isaac Shelby who served in the Revolutionary War and later became the first governor of Kentucky.
