The original name for the town was Seneca, but because there was another town by the name of Seneca further east, the West was added quickly to avoid any confusion. The first settlers were actually Native Americans over 1,000 years ago. The first white settlers were the Ebenezers who bought their land from the Indians. They had come from Germany where they were persecuted for their religious beliefs. They chose the area largely because it was an undeveloped wilderness where they hoped to find freedom from persecution. They left the area in 1862, after which major growth began to take place.
