Port Jervis has always been a transportation center for the area. It was a stop on the Old Mine Road, the first 100 miles road in the country. It was also a port on the Delaware and Hudson Canal. The name for Port Jervis came from John B. Jervis, chief engineer of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. It was incorporated as a village in 1853 as Port Jervis. Finally, it was a center for the New York and Lake Erie Railroad.
