History & History Related Items

In 1918, R.B. Jefferson was the lone resident of the area. When the Boulder Dam Bill was signed in 1928, he took good advantage of his location between Las Vegas and the dam site. He had already built a small building there in 1927, so in 1929 he and a partner, Mr. Bearden, subdivided a 40 acre parcel and named it Jericho Heights. An air strip was built here, one of the first in the county and many workers stopped in for “refreshments” at the end of their work days. In 1944, the Basic Townsite Post Office was opened. At this time the town was renamed Henderson for the late Senator, Charles B. Henderson.
