The area was first known as Blue Hills before becoming incorporated. Through the years, North Plainfield has been associated with several counties and townships, among them: Somerset County, Bernard Township (1769), Warren (1806), North Plainfield Township (1872). North Plainfield left the township in 1885 when it changed its government from that of a township to a borough. Previously, the North Plainfield Township had included North Plainfield, Watchung and Green Brook. Watchung left in 1926 and Green Brook in 1932.
