Wakefield was named for L.W. Wakefild, a surveyor who platted the townsite for the railroad. The area thrived because of the abundance of water and good soil. The Waldbaum Company, a global producer of eggs and frozen foods, began here in 1950. Wakefield was incorporated in 1881
