Schuyler was named for Schuyler Colfax, Vice President of the US with President Ulysses S. Grant. It was first known as Shell Creek Station and was a railhead and cattle loading post. The name is pronounced Sky-ler. It was named the county seat of Colfax County on 15 Mary 1869. It was incorporated in June of 1870.
