17 Dec 1903 - Orville and Wilbur Wright made history here with the first sustained flights by a heavier-than-air, powered machine. The brothers had made over 1,000 flights before successfully launching their "Kitty Hawk" (originally named Flyer I) here. The first flight was 12 seconds long. The last flight of the day went for 59 seconds. In 1932, a memorial was dedicated to the men. It is located on the US 158 Bypass at Milepost 8. The 431 acre area has a visitor center which includes replicas of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flyer. Other displays and reproductions may also be seen.
