History & History Related Items

The Chickasaw were the early inhabitants of this area. When Hernando De Soto came through in 1540, he found the group firmly established in the area. The Natchez Trace, established by the Chickasaw, was widely used by the early settlers of the area.

The Battle of Ackia in 1736 gave control of the area to the British. The city was named for the native Tupelo Gum Tree.
