The county was established in 1836, but its history goes much further back than that. The early residents were Native Americans who cleared the heavily forested land and built Indian Mounds In 1885, the county seat was moved to Tunica where it remains today.

In 1992, the county's first casino, Splash, opened to record crowds and ushered in the community's highly successful resort and tourism trade, leading up to the year 2000, when the county has become the nation's third largest gaming destination, trailing only Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

Tunica Municipal Airport
Present airport has a 2400 foot asphalt runway. The airport is located on Beatline Road, approximately one mile east of Highway 61 in the Town of Tunica. The airport will be approximately 12 miles south of Robinsonville (the main casino area).
