History & History Related Items

Corinth was first known as Cross City when it was founded in 1853 because it was a junction for the Mobile and Ohio and Memphis and Charleston railroads. The nickname for the city, The Crossroads City, reflects this first name.

Because of the location of the railroads, Corinth played an important part in the American Civil War. The fight for control of the city was known as the Siege of Corinth. A second fight is known as the Battoe of Corinth. Both sides held the city at different times with the Union Army keeping it in the end. Many landmarks from the war are in the area, including the Shiloh National Battlefield.
