Catron, Missouri Historical Events

2000, 6 March
Catron, Mo., is home to mostly laborers who work the cotton fields in that area. Cotton is the primary cash crop, as well as rice, soy beans and maize. Catron is a very poor community. The local cotton gins are closed down, and as these were previously the primary sources of employment in that area, the population has significantly declined. (from approx. 182 in the early '80s to today's 82 inhabitants). My dad worked most of his adult life in the Jolly Cotton Gin Company there, and my mom worked in the Post Office there. I grew up there. I miss it, but I couldn't really say I'd want to stay there... it was a unique opportunity for a boy to grow up, and in some ways I am sorry my children didn't get a chance to enjoy the freedom I had as a little punk kid running around barefoot in SwampEast Missouri. All they've known is city life, and I fear that is in some ways a bad thing. We have many friends and relatives still in that area. God bless you all.
