History & History Related Items

The first plat of the Village of Eveleth was filed on April 22, 1893, though the original filing was about a mile from the present site. It was named for Erwin Eveleth who was a timber cruiser for land owner, Robinson and Flinn. In checking out the area for the company, Mr. Eveleth noted that his compass became erratic in this area. They later learned it was from the presence of so much iron in the land. The company retained the mineral rights to the land when they sold it. Even then, they had no idea of the vast deposits of ore here.

During hard financial times of the 1890s, the small village had great difficulties with no new buildings, little food and they even had their mail service stopped. When the ore was discovered in 1895 right under the village, the site was moved to its present location and work began on the ore. By 1902, Eveleth was incorporated as a city. Mining continued to be an important part of the economy. Both open pit and underground mining took place. Though methods have changed and other types of ore have become important, mining still is important to the area. A history page for Eveleth. Also try this history page.
