Emmett was first known as Mount Crowley, even though it isn't on any type of mount. Located in Emmett Township, the village later was renamed with the same name as the township. Created in 1850, The township was named for Robert Emmett who was originally from Ireland.

Emmett is a village within the Emmett Township in St. Clair County. There is also an Emmett Charter Township located within Calhoun County southwest of Lansing, near Battle Creek.

The Village of Emmett now has a community newspaper. The newspaper, Emmett Village News, LLC comes out once a month, at the beginning of each month and covers news about the local people, businesses, schools, clubs, organizations, churches and events. The first issue was published on March 01, 2007. The paper is owned by Joan Korotko and Dottie Vernier.
