The name of Belleville is said to be in honor of James Bell, an early resident. The name means "beautiful village". It was first platted in 1847 as Bellville by three men, George Hill, D.L. Quirk and Robert Clark. It was incorporated as a village in 1905 and then as a city 14 May 1946. Though a city, it remains, to its citizens, as a small town, with friendliness and closeness within its boundaries.
