The City of Takoma Park, the first planned commuter suburb in Montgomery County Maryland, was founded in 1883 by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert. For many years, it was the world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist church denomination. Before 1997, a portion of the city was located in St George's County, but the state made re-alignment of the county line at that time, moving all of the city into Montgomery County. Takoma DC is just over the state line and is a separate entity though both share much history and heritage.
