Chamber of Commerce.
Springfield was named for Springfield, England. It was founded by William Pynchon of the Massachusetts Colony. Because it was a major arsenal for firearms, a number of poor farmers, led by Daniel Shays, tried to steal the weapons in 1787. They were unsuccessful in their attempt. They had hoped to force the return of their lands being seized by the courts.
Springfield is known as the birthplace of basketball. A local pe teacher, James Naismith, invented the game to fill in the time between football and baseball seasons.
