Orginally laid out as Kennerville town in 1855, Kenner was built on the plantations of William Butler and Minor Kenner. Many museums and shops may be browsed in the city's historical and cultural district, Rivertown, USA.
Major growth began in the 1950s as land was developed, and swampland filled in. I-10 was built in the 1960s further improving access to the area.

1982In 1982, Pan Am flight 759 crashed in a residential area of Kenner. A total of 154 people were killed (all 146 on board and 8 on the ground). Six houses were completely destroyed; five houses were substantially damaged.
