History & History Related Items

When Whitley County was formed in 1818, the town of Whitley Court House was also formed. Both were named for William Whitley. When the post office was opened the next year, the name was given as Whitley Court House. In 1882, the post office and the town names were both changed to Williamsburgh. The spelling was changed in 1890 to the current Williamsburg.

Cumberland Falls State Park
Williamsburg is about 18 miles from the park. The mist of Cumberland Falls creates a moonbow that is only visible on a clear night during a full moon. Cumberland Falls is known as "the Niagara of the South." It falls 68 feet in a 125 foot wide curtain of water. The park features lodging, food, recreation, camping and much more.
