When Whitley County was formed in 1818, the town of Whitley Court House was also formed. Both were named for William Whitley. When the post office was opened the next year, the name was given as Whitley Court House. In 1882, the post office and the town names were both changed to Williamsburgh. The spelling was changed in 1890 to the current Williamsburg.
