<p>
The founder of Eskridge is known to be Colonel Ephraim H. Sanford. He had around 700 acres of land on which he began Eskridge. There was only one house here when they bid to become the new county seat in February 1871. The bid eventually failed, but not after a strong attempt in which a runoff had to be held with Alma in which Alma emerged the victor. He began a newspaper which was only the second paper in the county. His press and other materials came from Emporia and had belonged to a Mr. Eskridge. This is for whom Mr. Sanford named his town. <br>
