In 1823, Alexis Coquillard founded a fur trade post and the settlement at that spot came to be known as South Bend. In the late 1800's, many large companies settled in the South Bend area, including the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, the world's largest produce of wagons and a number of others. By 1890, railroad lines had been firmly established to include South Bend which connected the area with Chicago and Toledo enabling it to grow with enthusiasm.
