First settled in 1821 by Samuel West when he built a log cabin. The town was founded two years later in 1823. In 1824, there were 40 residents. The naming story for the town is unsure, but some say it was named for the town of Montezuma in New York which lay on the original Erie Canal there. Others say it was for the Aztec emperors of the same name due to the large numbers of Native Americans in the area. Montezuma became a prominent city in the area due to its location on the Wabash River. It was a major shipping point for the county during its early years. Once the Wabash and Erie Canal was built in 1850, Montezuma thrived even more. For ten years, the prosperity continued. When the canal was closed, businesses declined and gradually closed. In 1873, the Indianapolis, Decatur and Springfield railroad was built through the Reserve Township and a station was opened here.
